In this 5-part series, students will learn to dye cotton fabric with indigo. Natural dyer and quilter Rosina Saqib will guide the group to build a tonal palette of blues through multiple dips in the indigo vat. She’ll discuss the different types of vats and how to care for and maintain a successful indigo vat at home.
Using the freshly dyed fabric, students will plan a 20” x 20” quilted pillow top or quilt square that will be machine pieced and hand-quilted. We’ll examine the different ways to approach quilting, from traditional to improvisational interpretations. We’ll use strip quilting as a starting point to design and plan your quilt square.
The student will complete the class by learning how to hand-quilt our machine-pieced fabric, covering beginner-friendly methods of hand-tying the quilt to more intricate hand-stitching. Students will leave with a finished quilted pillow top or square.
