The Art of Indigo 2026: A Hands-On Workshop in East Asian Textiles with Rosa Sung Ji Chang
In this hands-on workshop, participants will create two indigo-dyed fabric pieces featuring a range of indigo shades and intricate patterns. We will explore two traditional East Asian textile techniques, stitched shibori and soy flour paste resist, along with other playful pattern-making methods. Long practiced across East Asia, these approaches offer expressive ways to create patterns and imagery on cloth. Unlike rice paste, soy flour paste is easier to prepare and apply, making it an excellent medium for detailed designs.
Each participant will receive two fabric pieces, one cotton cloth and one long wearable silk scarf, to experiment with, either by adding stitched shibori patterning or drawing imagery with soy paste. By the end of the session, participants will leave with one versatile cotton piece and one silk scarf that can be enjoyed year-round.
