Alchemy of Color (Workshop #1)

from $192.50

Alchemy of Color: with Rosina Saqib

Teaching artist, quilter, and natural dyer Rosina Saqib is offering a two-part workshop series on quilting with naturally dyed fabric.  Designed as two complementary learning experiences, participants are encouraged to attend the series, but are welcome to take the Alchemy of Color or Quilting Foundations as stand alone offerings.

In the first part of the series, Alchemy of Color, students will create a palette of multi-dimensional autumnal color using one dye material. In the second part of the series, Quilting Foundations, students will learn the fundamentals of quilting by making a quilted square block or pillow using either naturally-dyed fabric (from Alchemy of Color) and/or fabric of their choosing.

In Alchemy of Color, participants will gain a deep understanding of the relationship between tannins, mordants, dyes, exhaust baths, and post-dye modifiers on cellulose (plant) fiber.  Using cutch as our primary dye material, we will create a range of tones from cinnamon to chocolate brown to caramel and peach. This approach is particularly complementary to quilting as it makes for an extensive and nuanced color palette, while maximizing the potential of dyes and limiting waste.  Students will create approximately one square yard of eight different tonal hues.  In addition, I’ll provide insights and instructions for setting up a home dye kitchen.

Note: Registration for this workshop closes on August 22nd. If partial payment is made August 22nd, Full payment must be made no later than the day of the workshop on September 05th.
