Material Exploration: Finding Form Through Folding

from $250.00
Registration is closed

In this workshop, textile artist and designer Jorgelina Lopez will guide you through the art of folding to create sculptural forms and dynamic surfaces. We'll begin with paper to grasp the fundamentals before transitioning to textiles and incorporating other materials for contemporary applications.

Wednesdays (4 sessions)

Dates:
Week 1: Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025
Week 2: Wednesday, April 30th, 2025
Week 3: Wednesday, May 07th, 2025
Week 4: Wednesday, May 14th, 2025

Time: 530 - 8:30 pm

Duration: 3 hours

Artist: Jorgelina Lopez (of La Loupe Studio)

Location: 209 McAllister Street, Studio A, Baltimore, MD 21202

This is a sliding-scale series of 4 hands-on classes. The course costs $250 - $300 (includes all materials)

Exploring folding across art, design, and science, we’ll examine its historical and cultural significance while experimenting with various techniques. The goal is to develop a library of samples or studies showcasing different folds and materials, documenting our research process

This hands-on exploration emphasizes the creative journey—where the act of folding connects our hands, minds, and surroundings, fostering innovation in both functional and artistic contexts.

  • 1st SESSION: Introduction to the art of folding, its historical overview, and cultural context. We will explore its concept and get hands-on with various basic folds on paper.

  • 2nd SESSION: Folding in art, design, and science. Translation of folding patterns and techniques from paper to textiles: softness vs rigidity

  • 3rd SESSION: Incorporation of different materials into our textiles. Analysis and ideas of contemporary applications and final compilation of our library of samples.

  • 4th SESSION: We will review the work of contemporary origami artist Tomoko Fuse, focusing on her study of the spiral form that we will apply for our final project.

During this course, the student will receive homework assignments to reinforce their practice at home between sessions.

Students will be encouraged to research and bring new materials for further exploration, although this is not required. Throughout the course, a variety of materials will be provided for experimentation and exploration.

Due to the extensive preparation of this offering, running this class is contingent on 5 students minimum. If for some reason the class does not meet the minimum student number, we will notify you and full refunds will be issued by April 23rd.
