This is a sliding scale series of 5 hands on classes. The class costs $350 - $450. To register please pay the full price or pay in two parts. The first payment in full or the first payment of two must happen prior to the start of class on, Wednesday, February 12th. If paying in two installments the second payment must happen by the third session on Wednesday, March 05th. Due to the extensive preparation of this offering running this class is contingent on 5 students minimum. If for some reason the class does not meet the minimum student number full refunds will be issued by February 19th.

About the Workshop:

This unique workshop series promises to unlock a spectrum of color from nature and foster a deep connection with the natural world around us. Over the course of five weeks, participants will be guided by instructor Kenya Miles through the captivating world of natural dyes. The workshop will delve into the intersection of artistic expression, history and storytelling, emphasizing the ancestral practices that have shaped the art of dyeing.

This hands-on experience is the beginning of a journey that connects you to centuries-old traditions and instills a profound appreciation for the natural dyeing process. Throughout the workshop, you will immerse yourself in the historical and cultural significance of natural dyes, fostering a deep affinity for the ancient techniques. This connection to ancestral practices will enrich your understanding and enhance your appreciation for the time-honored craft of dyeing.

What's Included:

The cost to participate in this comprehensive 5-week in person workshop series, with each session lasting for 3 hours, is priced at a sliding scale from $350 - $450. This fee covers guidance and instruction from Kenya Miles, a renowned artist, educator, and alchemist, and also includes all essential workshop materials.This fee ensures a complete, enriching experience of learning and engaging with the art and traditions of natural dyes.

Timeline & Class Objectives:

  • Week 1: Fabric Prep & Mordants: Learn how to prepare fiber and use a variety of mordants + tannins in preparation for effective dyeing.

  • Week 2: Printing with Mordants: Directly apply mordants to create dynamic imagery

  • Week 3: Calling in Color: coax vibrant color utilizing various natural dyes + tannins.

  • Week 4:  Color shifting + Discharging Mordants and Dyes: Experiment with a variety of bases and acids to discover experimental color and patterns.

  • Week 5: Experiment w/Soy Milk Sizing, earth pigments + complete final projects.
