Imprint and Inheritance: A textile lab with Sunaina Bhalla
Imprint and Inheritance: A textile lab with Sunaina Bhalla
Join Singapore based textile artist Sunaina Bhalla for a hands-on exploration of woodblock printing, pattern, and textile traditions.
Beginning with an introduction to the history of woodblock printing in India and China, Sunaina will share how this centuries old process has been used to create pattern, imagery, and richly printed surfaces across cloth and paper. Participants will have the opportunity to see and handle hand carved woodblocks while learning about the tools, materials, and techniques behind the process.
Following a demonstration, participants will begin experimenting with printing on paper, learning how pressure, placement, repetition, and color can transform a single motif into a larger pattern or composition. With more than 150 hand carved motifs to choose from, each participant can develop their own approach before moving onto fabric.
Participants will then use what they have learned to create their own hand printed scarf to take home.
This workshop is designed as a space for both learning and play. Participants are encouraged to experiment with pattern, repetition, layering, and composition while experiencing the tactile process of printing by hand.
Participants are also encouraged to bring a garment or textile from home to print on. Natural fabrics with smooth surfaces work best, including cotton and linen clothing or household textiles.
Hand carved woodblocks will also be available for purchase directly from the artist for $8–$20, cash only.
No previous printmaking or textile experience is necessary. All experience levels are welcome.
