In this workshop, transdisciplinary artist Vetiver will guide you through the art of block printing using pre-carved wood blocks (not pictured) and natural pigments made from plants, produce, and other organic materials. Centered on preserving cultural practices and narratives through mark-making, this workshop will provide participants with basic printmaking techniques, enabling them to walk away with greater self-efficacy for recording and maintaining their identities and lived experiences or those of their family and community(ies).
Saturday, Oct 24th | Session 1: Vetiver’s Roots and Community Tapestry
Participants are introduced to Vetiver’s Roots Design Studio and basic blockprinting techniques. They will work together to create a community tapestry and will practice natural dyeing to create their own custom textile.
Sunday, Oct 25th | Session 2: Individual Printing
Participants will use pre-carved wood blocks and natural ink to print onto their dyed fabric. Each participant will take away their own block printed tapestry.
This workshop is offered in conjunction with the launch of Vetiver’s Roots Design Studio, a curation platform grounded in the concept of sacred space featuring eco-conscious textiles inspired by African diasporic and ancestral traditions of working with land and plant spirits, and intuitively selected preloved statement decor.
