Worn Histories: Designing & Making of the West African Smock with Amen, Amen. Studios

Amen, Amen. Studio is the joint creative practice of Danielle McCoy and Jordan Jackson. Jordan is apparel designer exploring expression and storytelling through the style, craft, and experiences of the African Diaspora, and building an Africana design philosophy. This design approach seeks to connect history and heritage while building relationships across the diaspora through supply chain and manufacturing.

From this perspective, Jordan is offering a one-day workshop on the history, design, and construction of the West African-inspired smock. Using minimal-waste patterning and insights from traditional West African tailoring, workshop participants will design and make their own garment. The workshop will be broken down into two parts. First, we will discuss the history and context of the design and craft of these garments. Then, using full-width natural textiles, we will go step-by-step through designing, measuring, cutting, and machine sewing the smock, including clean finishing and aftercare. This workshop is beginner friendly.

Participants will leave with:

  • Participants can expect to leave the workshop with a reference document, their finished garment, and skills that they can incorporate into their own work and knowledge base.

Note: Registration for this workshop closes on August 14th. If partial payment is made August 14th, Full payment must be made no later than the day of the workshop on August 22nd.
